VP Capital invests in Orbisk: Tackling food waste through AI

17 September, 2026 - Food waste remains one of the world's biggest sustainability challenges. Every year, nearly one-fifth of all food available to consumers worldwide is wasted, equating to more than USD 1 trillion. This results in unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of valuable resources.

Addressing food waste therefore requires solutions across the entire food system. One area with significant potential is the food service sector, which accounts for around 28% of the estimated 1.05 billion tonnes of food wasted globally across households, food service, and retail.* Professional kitchens have a valuable opportunity to reduce this waste and use resources more efficiently.

This is where Orbisk comes in. By investing in Orbisk, we are supporting an AI-powered solution that provides professional kitchens with the insights they need to significantly reduce food waste and lower operational costs.

Turning food waste into actionable insights

Founded in Utrecht in 2019, Orbisk helps hotels, catering organisations, and cruise operators gain real-time insights into food waste through an AI-powered camera and weighing system. Installed above the food waste bin, the technology automatically recognises and weighs discarded food before translating this data into practical recommendations for chefs. Customers typically reduce food waste by 40–50%, with some achieving reductions of up to 70%. Today, Orbisk works with four of the five world's largest hotel chains and has installed more than 900 monitoring systems worldwide.

What sets Orbisk apart is the positioning of its camera and weighing system above the bin. Unlike many existing solutions that measure waste inside the bin, Orbisk's system captures cleaner, more reliable data before the food disappears from view. Combined with proprietary AI models and seamless workflow integration, this enables kitchen teams to make better decisions with minimal disruption to existing processes.

Anastasia Dellis, CEO of Orbisk, said:

“VP Capital shares our conviction that impact and commercial success reinforce one another. Food waste is a trillion dollar problem, and professional kitchens can lead the way in solving it. This investment allows us to accelerate our mission and bring food waste intelligence to kitchens worldwide.”

The company recently strengthened its leadership team with CEO Anastasia Dellis and CFO Teun Castelijns, expanded its relationships with major international hospitality customers, and shortened its commercial sales cycles. As regulatory expectations and ESG reporting requirements continue to increase, reducing food waste is rapidly becoming a standard operational priority across the foodservice industry.

Creating impact through circular solutions

This investment strengthens our impact-first strategy by supporting a venture that directly contributes to our circular solutions. By helping professional kitchens use resources more efficiently, Orbisk reduces waste, helps avoid CO2 emissions, and creates measurable financial value for its customers. The solution demonstrates that sustainability and commercial success can reinforce one another without requiring a green premium.

Beyond the solution itself, we were inspired by Orbisk's mission-driven culture. Since its foundation, the company has remained committed to eliminating food waste while building a diverse international team and combining this purpose with increasing commercial discipline as it scales. Orbisk’s B Corp certification is a further testament to this commitment, demonstrating its ambition to embed positive impact in the way it operates. As a fellow B Corp, we value this shared commitment to using business as a force for good.

Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital, said:

“Orbisk is a strong example of how innovative technology can turn a global challenge into a practical solution. Food waste is not only an environmental issue, but also a source of unnecessary costs throughout the food value chain. By providing kitchens with actionable insights into where food is being wasted, Orbisk enables them to make better decisions that reduce waste over time. We look forward to supporting the team as they continue to scale their impact.”

By investing in Orbisk, we continue to back early-stage ventures that develop practical solutions for today's environmental challenges and contribute to a more circular and resource-efficient economy.
